Investment opportunities abound at all levels of the franchise development continuum.  By finding the right concept, any investors can make significant returns by investing at nearly any level in the development process.  This program will outline why the franchise business model can be a profitable investment for a strategic or financial investor, the types of returns that can be achieved, the special considerations that go into acquiring or investing in a franchise company, and some of the strategies for sourcing these opportunities.

This program will appeals to all levels of equity investors and talk about successful stories of investment. The use of case studies and a panel of experts will validate the successful investments that have been made.

Mary Ann O'Connell is the founder of FranWise® a franchise-consulting firm. O’Connell, with 36 years of experience as a franchisee, franchisor and franchise consultant, was the inaugural franchisee for Money Mailer, Inc. developing sales and marketing methods used by the entire franchise system. For the past 16 years, O’Connell has served as President of FranWise®, which provides strategic planning, feasibility studies, manuals, training and franchise system optimization for franchisors.

She is the Co-chairman of the Orange County FBN, Immediate Past Chairman of the IFA’s Women’s Franchise Committee and a member of the Supplier Forum Board.  She was recently awarded IFA’s Crystal Compass Award that recognizes excellence in franchise leadership.  Mary Ann is a frequent speaker at events throughout the franchise community.

Kevin Hein is a partner in the Denver office of Faegre Baker Daniels, where he is a member of the firm’s Franchise and Distribution Practice. He focuses his practice on a wide range of legal issues facing franchise and restaurant companies, including mergers and acquisitions, corporate counseling and structuring, state and federal disclosure issues, compliance with state relationship laws, franchise sales compliance, restaurant development, and dispute resolution.

Kevin has extensive experience in representing both strategic and financial buyers in buying, selling, and investing in large and small franchise brands. In addition, he represents franchise companies in the full scope of matters, including state and federal disclosure issues, compliance with state relationship laws, dispute resolution, franchise sales compliance, bankruptcy matters, real estate, mergers and acquisitions, and general corporate issues.

Burt Yarkin is a Managing Director of The McLean Group’s San Francisco, CA office. Mr. Yarkin leads The McLean Group’s Franchise and Consumer, Specialty Retail & Restaurant practices, advising global companies, franchisors and large multi-unit franchisees on mergers & acquisitions and capital formation. The Franchise practice group is one of the most active investment banking groups nationally.  Mr. Yarkin works closely and maintains strong ties with entrepreneurs, franchisors and key institutional investors operating within the Franchise and Consumer, Specialty Retail & Restaurant industries.

Prior to becoming an investment banker, Mr. Yarkin worked in franchising for more than 25 years. Mr. Yarkin has held senior management positions with such well-known international brands as Cartridge World, Gymboree and 1-800-Flowers and spearheaded efforts to grow those brands globally. As past CEO of Cartridge World, Mr. Yarkin oversaw the rapid growth of the brand and he was instrumental in completing a large private equity transaction for a sale of the company.

Aaron Chaitovsky , CPA, is an audit partner and leader of the firm’s Franchise Accounting and Consulting practice at Citrin Cooperman, a top 25 national accounting firm.  His work with franchisors includes audits of financial statements, international tax structuring, expansion consulting, due diligence and acquisition services, the structuring of royalty audit programs, and succession planning.  Additionally, Aaron works closely with the Firm’s  Private Equity practice providing strategic guidance to private equity funds, portfolio companies, and venture capital and buyout firms throughout the entire fund cycle; steering all aspects of fund services, transaction advisory services, and portfolio management and compliance through a comprehensive suite of attest, tax, structuring, compliance, valuation, and business advisory services.

Aaron is a member of the Supplier Forum Advisory Board at the International Franchise Association; a member of the Steering Committee on the Task Force for Franchising in the Social Sector; and a member of the Membership Committee of the IFA.  His practice focuses on both active and emerging franchisors as well as multi-unit franchisees.  As a frequent speaker, author, and lecturer on various franchise and hospitality-related topics, he is also one of the instructors included in the annual training sessions for the state franchise examiners from the various State Attorney General Offices and to members of the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA).
